In a series circuit, components are connected from end to end, creating a single path for current to flow. All elements within the circuit have the same current running through them.
In a parallel circuit, all components are connected, sharing two electrical nodes. Each component has the same voltage across it.
A series circuit is one in which all circuit elements are arranged in a single path. In a series circuit, the current through all elements is the same, but the voltage drop across each element is different.
V^2/R is used when the potential in the circuit is same. I.e. if the two resistance are connected parallel then we will use V^2/R to calculate the power. Similarly if resistances are connected in series then current will be constant in the circuit. Then, we will use I^2R formula to calculate power.
Two bulbs in a simple parallel circuit each enjoy the full voltage of the battery. This is why the bulbs in the parallel circuit will be brighter than those in the series circuit. Another advantage to the parallel circuit is that if one loop is disconnected, then the other remains powered.
